Snæfellsnes - The West Peninsula
The West peninsula, Snæfellsnes - Home of the Snæfellsnesjökull glacier. A truly mythical place with an immense aura and legendary tales.
A magical sightseeing flight over the recent eruption sites on the Reykjanes peninsula.
You will depart from Reykjavík and fly towards the Reykjanes peninsula. you will experience Reykjavík from above, On our way out of the city we will overfly the presidential residence, Bessastaðir, then shortly the fierce lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula will fill the landscape from below.
Your pilot will start by showing you the newest crater, if there is an ongoing eruption your pilot will do multiple passes over it.
Then he will proceed to show you the town of Grindavík which as been heavily affected by the eruptions, with the government building a giant wall around the town in order to protect it from the flowing lava.
From there you will over fly the world famous Blue Lagoon, a place that has also been heavily affected by the eruptions due to its closeness to the eruptions. A wall has also been built around the Lagoon and temporary roads have been built to the lagoon after the old road was destroyed by flowing lava.
Proceeding from the Blue Lagoon, your pilot will over fly the first crater of the new eruption period, the 2021 crater, the big one… and our favorite one. Lava, filled with all kinds of colors, red from the iron particles, green and yellow from the sulfur and rising steam.
From there you will then fly to the crater from the summer eruption of 2023, Litli Hrútur crater, the small one. When this one was erupting 1000´s of people flocked to it by hiking for hours to experience it.
Then you will head back to Reykjavík airport, where you will again experience the amazing views of Reykjavík from above while coming into landing.
All passengers get big window seats so the views are all equally good no matter where you sit.
The plane you will take is the Cessna 206, also known as the pickup truck of the skies, due to it´s ruggedness and durability, a type of aircraft used all over the world in extreme conditions. from the jungles of the amazon to the wilderness of Alaska
Please note:
The flight might be subjected for change on pilot’s discretion if weather is unfavorable.
